Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the service last?

A typical service lasts about 90 minutes.

What is the structure of the service?

Our worship follows a four-part structure: Greeting, The Service of the Word, The Service of the Table, and Dismissal. During the greeting we prepare for worship through song, and prayer. The first major part of the service begins with the reading of Scripture from the Old and New Testaments, with hymns and a psalm in between. The Service of the Word culminates in the Sermon as a response to the Word, the declaration of the Nicene Creed, and group prayer. Following this is a shift towards joining Jesus Christ at the Holy Table, where we recite Scripture describing Jesus’ sacrifice and the promise of his return. After receiving communion, the congregation is dismissed to share the Gospel (the good news of Christ’s resurrection) to the world. After service is a time of fellowship with coffee and treats.

Is childcare available during the worship service?

Yes! We have a nursery for kids from birth through preschool.
Older children are welcome to attend the service from the beginning through the True Story from the Bible. Then they go with their teachers for age-appropriate learning groups and chapel time when all the kids gather for worship.

What should I wear?

On Sunday mornings you will see a range of clothing from jeans and a T-shirt to formal wear. Please wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Is there a time to chat?

Please feel free to join us after the worship service for coffee and other refreshments. This is an excellent opportunity to meet others and ask questions!

How does your communion work?

If you are a baptized Christian, you are welcome to come forward to receive the bread and the wine. If you are not yet baptized or committed to Christ, you are welcome to come forward and receive a prayer of blessing on your life. We have gluten-free options available.

Do I need to give money at the offering?

The ministry of St. Matthew’s is paid for by the voluntary, sacrificial, and generous giving of our members. If you are visiting, please do not feel obligated to put anything into the offering plate. You are a welcome guest and we are glad you’re here!

Is the building handicap accessible?

Yes! There is a level entrance from the parking lot to the church. The service and restrooms are on the ground floor. There is an elevator down to the parish hall.

What is the music like?

Our worship services are an elegant blend of Anglican liturgy, music from several centuries, and teaching from the Bible.
St. Matthew’s choir leads the congregational singing, supported by organ and piano. The music of our worship services is a blend of traditional hymns and chants together with contemporary hymns and sacred songs. We are encouraged by the perseverance of the faith, and embrace new melodies designed to lift up our souls in song.
Each week we sing a large variety of songs, and our choir performs an anthem during the offering.

What are the sermons like?

At St. Matthew’s, we practice expository preaching – carefully explaining what the Bible says and thoughtfully applying it to our lives.
